Health Insurance: Terms and Conditions to be Aware of

Did you know that once you opt for a health insurance policy, medical treatment costs incurred during the first 30 days after policy commencement will not be covered? Only injuries sustained in accidents would be considered worthy of claims, within this period. This is just one of the conditions and terms governing medical insurance policies in India that buyers need to be aware of. Some other equally important ones have been listed here for your benefit.

Terms of Health Insurance Policies You Need to Check on

Medical emergencies could be nerve wrecking in most cases and your health insurance policy should act as the perfect support at such times. And, it would always be prudent to check on the terms and conditions before buying a policy, in order to avoid unhappy surprises either at the time of purchasing or when seeking claims. Some aspects to check on would include:

·         Every medical insurance policy would have an age limit for the applicant. For instance, the best ones would offer limits as wide as 18 to about 65 years. However, in most cases, medical tests would be warranted after a certain age barrier, normally 55 years. So, if you are above that age, and suffering from chronic medical conditions, a health insurance policy could prove to be of little help.
·         Insurance companies have specific norms with respect to preexisting illnesses. So, if you already have gallstones before policy purchase, the health insurance policy may not cover the cost of removing them at a later date. However, there are insurers who waive off such inclusions once you have completed an extended duration as policy holder, be it 48 months or 60 months or whatever. These are easily the best policies to go for!

·         Normally, certain surgical procedures would not be covered during the first year of policy tenure. Some of the common ones included in this list could be hernia, anal fistula, piles or fissures, adenoids or tonsillitis and so on since they would be considered as preexisting. Make sure you take note of the specific list of diseases and procedures. Similarly, there would be a list of excluded procedures for the first couple of years of the health insurance policy tenure as well. These too would have to be referred to for complete clarity.

Whenever you choose a health insurance policy, always make sure you have chosen one that covers hospitalization as well as non hospitalization charges like the cost of diagnostics, medications and so on.
